Sombre is one of the most widespread hair trends of recent years. Although this way of colouring may be associated mainly with summer, it is just as often chosen in other months of the year. Where does this extraordinary popularity come from? It is due above all to the impression of complete naturalness that the final effect gives. It is no wonder such lightened hair is often described as sun-kissed. But where did sombre itself come from, and what does the process look like?
How to do sombre?

Simply breaking down the name of the effect into its component parts gives us a broader picture. The word “sombre” comes from combining the name of another equally popular colouring method, ombre, with the English word “soft”. On this basis we can say that sombre is nothing other than a gentler ombre. The main difference is a much less visible transition between colours, which remains one of its greatest advantages. With this type of colouring, the hair near the roots is left in its natural colour, while the ends are lightened to a small degree through highlights in various shades (the difference in tone is just one or at most two shades). The length of the hair also needs mentioning – depending on its shade, the effect may vary on shorter styles, though this does not mean it cannot be done properly.
It is also worth noting that applying the method successfully requires expert technique and a great deal of sensitivity to the whole colouring process. Sombre is an extremely demanding process. The best decision remains entrusting your hair to hairdressing professionals, who will not only work on it with due care but also help you choose the right shade.
Sombre on dark hair
For darker hair, pure ombre is much more often the chosen option. The main reason is the contrast we can achieve. Does this mean we have to abandon dreams of natural, sunny highlights, so characteristic of sombre? Absolutely not. Suitably chosen shades of brown will make the effect striking. What is more – thanks to sombre we can let go of concerns about any damage to hair, which especially often accompanies owners (of both sexes) of dark hair.
Sombre on blonde
Blonde is sombre’s best friend. There is no doubt about that. The exceptionally subtle effect makes hair look effortlessly lighter, and as a result we achieve a result very similar to natural brightening from the spring or summer sun. In this way – in a completely unobtrusive manner – we can give hair a completely new and fresh character while avoiding overly drastic changes.
Sombre on brown hair
The character of the sombre method means it also suits hair in a whole range of brown shades, which will look both innovative and natural. A stylist’s watchful eye ensures the colour transition stays even and the highlights are perfectly placed. What is more, with “brown” sombre we do not need to worry about regrowth or the need to recolour. The latter will certainly come sooner or later, though. Nothing suggests that the soft ombre effect will ever go out of hair fashion.
