Fluffy, Shaggy, Unruly CURLS

Today something for people with curly hair. I’ll tell you how to look after and care for your lush curls. I’ll start by saying that we don’t brush hair when it’s dry, only after washing. That way we don’t damage it, or end up with one big puff and a haystack on our heads. When drying, it’s best to scrunch them. A diffuser is a great tool – thanks to it we avoid ‘frizz’. It stops hair blowing in all directions, lifts it from the roots and gives it full curl. If you have plenty of time, it’s good to leave them to dry on their own.
Curls are usually dry, frizzy and brittle; to the touch they are porous and (perpetually) rough.
That is why moisturising them is so important. Be sure to use a conditioner after every wash. Ideally, apply a mask for longer twice a week – 10–15 minutes as a compress under a warm towel.
RUN FROM THE HAIRDRESSER’S CHAIR IF YOU SEE THAT…
For a curl to have good shape and bounce, the cut must be well executed – we rule out ragged cuts, meaning those without thinning shears, razor or tapering. The ‘slicing cut’ technique is absolutely forbidden – sliding the blade along the hair. After such a cut, hair starts to frizz and is heavily thinned, or rather, shredded.
Imagine a serpentine ribbon – a common sight in a flower shop, when the florist slides scissors along a ribbon and makes it curl. When they do the same action again, the ribbon straightens. IT IS THE SAME WITH HAIR.
THEREFORE…!
Curly hair sits best after cuts that are straight and even. As for layering, only the classic around-the-perimeter kind (a good hairdresser should know it) and point cutting, which adds variety to the curls and allows better curl definition and lift. Point cutting creates more irregularity in the style, because each strand is cut to a different length – and as we know, a curl is unpredictable and curls differently each time. That is why strands of varying lengths allow for a controlled storm of curls.
