We’re in the middle of a beautiful, hot and, above all, sunny summer. Holiday time doesn’t always mean rest for our hair. Quite the opposite if we don’t look after it properly. Here are a few tips on how to easily care for the condition of your hair.
Sunlight works much like bleach, only applied to hair. The “bleach” reacts with the melanin in your hair and removes colour in an irreversible chemical reaction. The “bleach” also damages the coating and protein of the hair, known as keratin.
Colouring your hair in summer carries the risk of losing your dream colour. The sun considerably lightens it and makes dark-dyed hair fade. So what should summer hair care look like?
1. Wear headwear when you’re out in the sun
You can use a hat, cap, scarf or headscarf, adapting your choice to the occasion. It’s important to remember this on the beach as well as on a walk, in the garden or on a boat. Even when sitting on the balcony, it’s worth protecting your hair.
2. Use cosmetics with UV filters
For summer we especially recommend products for dry hair. Their ingredients include extracts of chamomile, nuts, willow or amber, zinc oxide, aloe, avocado, shea butter and many others. Summer care is extremely important especially for hair that is naturally dry or undergoing the natural ageing process, when the scalp produces less and less sebum and needs extra protection and moisture. However, if you feel that despite dryness your hair is weighed down by regenerating and protective products, you can reach for ultra-light oil sprays with protective filters.
3. Give up treatments that weaken hair
It’s best to forget about straighteners, curling tongs and hairsprays. In summer such treatments further dry out the hair, which is just one step towards breakage and a weakened hair structure.
4. Don’t dry your hair in the sun
It’s best not to do this at all, but in particular don’t dry hair in the sun if it’s wet from salt water. After getting out of the sea, it’s worth squeezing the hair in a towel or cotton T-shirt, spritzing it with a protective mist, a leave-in conditioner spray or silicone serum, and hiding your hair under a hat, cap or scarf, or plaiting it into a bun or braid. Beach tents that protect against the sun are also recommended. Remember to wash your hair with a gentle shampoo when you return from the beach.
5. Look after proper care and moisturising of your hair after sun exposure
If you have dark hair, use products suited to that colour, ideally ones that contain chlorophyll. Remember to moisturise properly with oils and moisturising masks. Try to keep your hair regularly moisturised, regardless of the time of day or where you are.
