Highlights and the freehand technique are two different ways of working, both in hairdressing and in painting, each with its own distinctive features. Below we present a detailed description of the differences between these techniques, including the process, colour durability, aftercare and other aspects.
What does the process of both colouring techniques look like?
The process of highlighting hair involves several steps. First, the hairdresser separates thin strands of hair, usually about 1 cm wide, and then applies the colour to each strand using a special brush or applicator. Once the colour is applied, each strand is wrapped in foil or clipped so the colour can stay in place and develop. After the appropriate time, the colour is rinsed off and the hair is thoroughly washed and dried. Please note, however, that lightening or applying colour with foil is very invasive and weakens the hair, so it requires particular and proper aftercare.
The freehand technique, which we perform in our salon, involves styling the hair without special tools.
Hairdressers use only their hands for this, sometimes to blend the colour, with a brush, to emphasise the natural beauty of the hair. The process begins with thoroughly washing and drying the hair. Then the hairdressers use their hands to shape the hair and achieve the desired effect. To do this they may use various techniques, such as gentle blending, pulling, double pulls and many others. This technique requires a great deal of skill and experience to achieve the desired result. Each of the stylists in Dawid Krynicki’s Salon will carry out this colouring with precision, using only high-quality dyes.
What about durability?
Dye used for highlights usually has high durability, because it is applied to smaller areas and protected by foil or a clip. Dyes used in the highlighting technique are generally long-lasting and wash-resistant, which means the colour can last for a longer time.
On the other hand, dyes used in the freehand technique are generally less durable, because they are applied to larger areas and not protected by foil or a clip. As a result, the colour may wash out of the hair more quickly, requiring more frequent colouring. However, it is much gentler and looks more natural.
Aftercare:
When highlights are used, aftercare requires proper hair care so that the colour lasts a long time. Anyone with highlights should avoid aggressive shampoos and styling products, as they can negatively affect colour longevity. Regular use of conditioners and hair masks is also recommended to maintain condition and prevent damage.
With the freehand technique, aftercare is also important, but it works in a slightly different way. This technique often uses natural styling products, such as oils or styling balms, which help keep the hair looking healthy and soft. Anyone with hair styled using the freehand technique should wash their hair regularly and use caring products such as oils and masks to maintain the health and condition of their hair. DK Shampoo and Conditioner is the best way to keep your hair in perfect condition and to achieve, at home, the same effect you get after leaving the salon, every day!
Highlights are popular among women who want to enhance their beauty and change their look. This technique can be used to lighten or darken hair colour, and also to achieve an ombré effect or balayage (also known as ”balejaż”).
The freehand technique is more subtle and natural than highlights. It is often used in men’s hairstyling, but is also popular with women who want a natural, subtle look. The technique can achieve a range of effects, from waves and volume to sleek, smooth styles.
To sum up, highlights and the freehand technique are two different styling techniques, each with its own distinctive characteristics. Highlights are ideal for people who want a stronger colour effect, whereas the freehand technique is an excellent choice for those who prefer a natural, subtle look. Whichever technique you choose, it is important to care for your hair properly to achieve the desired result and keep it healthy and in good condition.
