Balayage (the correct spelling is „balayage”) is a hair colouring technique which involves painting strands with dye in such a way as to achieve a natural transition of colours, often called the „sun-kissed” or „beachy” look. Balayage is a specific colouring technique that requires some skill and experience on the part of the hairdresser. At our Dawid Krynicki’s Salon, every stylist will create a beautiful balayage for your hair.
What exactly is balayage?
Balayage is a hair colouring technique in which dye is painted freely onto strands to achieve a natural lightening or tonal effect. The technique comes from France and has been used for several decades.
During balayage, the hairdresser applies dye to selected strands, freely and by hand, without the foil or caps used in other colouring techniques. Because the dye is applied freely, a natural and gentle effect can be achieved, resembling light reflects in the hair.
Balayage can be used on hair of any length and colour, although it looks best on medium-length or longer hair. The technique allows for many different effects, from subtle reflects to light streaks, and it also allows different colours to be combined, e.g. brown and blonde.
Caring for hair after balayage.
Hair after balayage requires special care to keep it looking beautiful. Firstly, it is recommended to use shampoos and conditioners for coloured hair, which not only preserve the colour but also prevent dryness and brittleness. DK Shampoo and Conditioner will bring your hair to an ideal state of moisture, freshness and colour longevity. Its carefully developed, safe formula, containing top-quality nourishing extracts, vitamins and antioxidants, will help you say goodbye to unruly hair and keep the look of a perfect hairstyle every day.
Additionally, it is important to use heat-protection products before using styling tools such as hairdryers, straighteners or curling tongs.
Myth about balayage
Balayage damages hair. Nonsense! Unlike other colouring methods, balayage is less damaging to hair because it requires neither foil nor heating. Foil dyeing and lightening is not carried out in our salon, as it often requires high temperatures during application, which further worsens the condition of the hair. High temperature can open the hair cuticles, leading to loss of moisture and nutrients. In addition, balayage requires lightening only selected strands, which means the process is less invasive for the hair.
Colouring frequency
How often balayage needs to be refreshed depends on each person’s individual needs and lifestyle. Usually, however, it is advisable to colour the strands every 3–4 months, to maintain the intensity of the colour and avoid excessive damage to the hair.
Balayage examples
- Balayage on blonde hair
Balayage on blonde hair is the most common sight in hair salons. This colouring technique creates naturally lightened ends that add volume and depth to the hairstyle. An example is blonde balayage with light reflects, which adds warm and natural tones to the hair.
- Balayage on dark hair
Balayage on dark hair creates contrast between darker and lighter strands. This technique is ideal for people who want an ombré effect without excessively lightening their hair. An example is dark balayage with subtly lightened ends.
- Balayage on red hair
Balayage on red hair is an ideal way to enhance natural tones and achieve a full, warm look. This technique adds light tones to darker hair, giving the hairstyle a more natural appearance. An example is warm balayage on red hair with lighter reflects.
In summary, balayage is a delicate and subtle hair colouring technique that requires the right knowledge and skill. This method suits every hair type and can be done on different hair colours. Balayage is less invasive for hair than traditional colouring methods, but it does require proper care.
